| Larry's
quest for 2008 Beijing Olympics |
 |
Although Larry has been training earnestly
all through the winter, the Easter weekend saw
his chance to put this to the test. At RAF Cosford,
Great Britain's elite archers met to compete
in the first of the Olympic 2008 shoot-offs
and for a place in the European Championships.
Competitors shot two FITA 720 rounds followed
by round robin individual matches against each
other. Despite poor lighting conditions Larry
managed to achieve second place out of eight,
being beaten by only 0.9 of a point by Michael
Peart. Larry was happy with this and secured
his place to represent Great Britain at the
European Championships in Vittel, France in
May together with Michael and Alan Wills.
He can't rest on his laurels however, as there
are still two further Olympic shoot-offs in
early June before the final team of three recurve
men are chosen to go to the games in August.
His goal is to be in that team and win the gold
medal so the hard work continues with the first
World Cup event in the Dominion Republic at
the beginning of April.
The main programme of events that Larry is
participating in leading up to the games are
shown below and he hopes to update his progress
as the year unfolds through this web site.

These were the words
Larry Godfrey used after the qualification
FITA round at the 44th World Archery Championships
held, last week in Leipzig, Germany. He
came 6th out of a total of 173 of the world's
best men Recurve archers shooting a score
of 1341. This score bettered the score he
shot at the 43rd championships in Madrid
in 2005 by 7 points and which set a new
British record in 2005. At this World Championships
he set a new British record of 692 for the
two shortest distances of the round. Weather
conditions were not ideal and it was a cold
and rainy day.
However Larry started well and was only
second to the Korean, Lee, at the 90 metre
distance. He maintained his position in
the top ten through out the qualification
round. This score, together with the rest
of the GBR team, Terry and Wills, put them
second team in the qualification round on
Tuesday. |
|
| The
main goal for the British archers at this World
Championships was to secure Britain's Olympic
places at the Games next year in Beijing. This
was achieved on Thursday during the team elimination
competition. The top eight teams secured three
Olympic places each, with fifty-nine teams completing
for this prize. Both men and women GBR teams achieved
this goal.
The remainder of the
week was devoted to the Team and Individual
head-to-head knock-out events. GBR did very
well with the Recurve Men achieving silver medals,
the Recurve Women achieving bronze and Alan
Wills achieving individual bronze in his match
against fellow British archer Simon Terry.

|
 |
The
next event for Larry is the fourth leg of the
Archery World Cup in August, which is being held
in Dover. He is concentrating on the 70 metre
head-to-head eliminations and is determined to
do well. Then, it's straight on to Lord's cricket
ground in London to advertise the 2012 Olympics
in a competition with the archers from China and
India. Now that the Beijing Olympic places have
been secured Larry is looking forward to the next
12 months and knows that the training schedule
will be punishing. However, he is philosophical
- in this life you get out what you put in - and
so he is hoping to better his Athens 2004 performance
and bring home a medal next year.
