Christmas Skittle Evening 2011
Thank you Hillary for laying on a fantastic evening, and my apology for not adding this to our December Christmas news letter, it slipped the news net.

It was great to see so many of the Cleve Archer members attending and taking part, also to see all the results of the precision aiming on the screen. There was a lovely spread of food that I am sure all who indulged will agree that it was very tasty.

There was an excellent team effort organised by Hillary who enlisted the help of some junior members to score and monitor the score board. Also I am sure all who attended wish to thank our two volunteers for sticking up the skittles (although there were a few occasions when there was very little to do, quack quack !!!), Ed and Freya. Thank you very much.
Christmas Fun Shoot
A very BIG thank you to all that helped throughout the morning to make it yet another
great success. It was well attended with a good mix of Cleve Archers, seventy two or more
came along to join in the archery and / or eating, drinking (none alcoholic unfortunately,
youngsters about / time of day and the Police breathalyser groups that are about !!).

There were forty-four archers shooting, each target had a mix of Seniors, Juniors and
Beginners to encourage more interaction with new and seasoned archers.

There was the usual spot price, unknown to all until announced. This was the belt buckle of Father Christmas.

Spot prize result;
Target 1 Nick Bendle
Target 2 Ben Pembery
Target 3 Tricia Pillay
Target 4 Harry Bowers
Target 5 Jamie Constable
Target 6 Ellis Brine

The results of the Christmas Fun Shoot;
Category Highest Lowest
Junior Lady Ellis Brine 108 Freya Smith -30
Junior Gent Jamie Constable 300 Joe Rawle 20
Senior Lady Megan Vaughan 184 Francesca Hawker -15
Senior Gent Chris Filer 184 Stu Boyd -160
Beginner Lady Anne Norbury 135 Pauline Abbott 30
Beginner Gent Richard Brown 150 Rob Norbury 68

There was also a guest appearance on the day, as Megan Vaughan one of our older juniors
came back for the morning to shoot with us. It was great to see you Megan.
Christmas Hamper Raffle

The winning tickets for the Christmas Hamper were drawn during the munch and drink
interlude between shoots. We hope you enjoy the generous contributions from our club
members, and the beginners who were with us on Saturday. The raffle raised £95.65 not
sure where the odd 15p came from, but thank you.

The winners were;
1st Prize Trevor and Anne Powell Hamper
2nd Prize April Griffin Hamper
3rd Prize Hillary jones Chocolates and Bottle
4th Prize Nathan Dorny Chocolates and Bottle
5th Prize Vicki Trott Bottle

Photographs of the Christmas Shoot are now on the Cleve Club web site:

http://www.clevearchers.co.uk/xmas2011/index.html

As time was running a bit short we moved on to the big ballon shooting bonanza. All
archers participated and enjoyed popping a few balloons, messy but what fun we all had.

During this there was small presentations to all our year long helpers, just to show our
appreciation of the time and effort they all put in with the Juniors.

Unlike last year there was no snow this time, but it was a little slippery out there. Again a
big thank you to all who helped out, before, during and at the end with the big clean / clear
up and pack away.

Have a great Christmas break and a Happy New Year.
Adrian and Tracey.

Xmas Fun Shoot =D
I would like to thank everyone for bringing along such a lovely spread of food, also Edmond for the doughnuts (happy birthday Edmond). I would also like to thank my Mum (Tracey) and Dad (Adrian) for all the planning and preparation for the Christmas Fun Shoot.

Thank you to everyone for turning up and having a great time.

Happy Birthday to Chris Jones
50 years old, yes that's 50 years old, yes I know 50 is really old and Chris is really 50 years
old (on 23rd Dec), did I mention that Chris Jones is 50 years old.

So its time to get revenge for all the horrible things he has said in the past about the rest of us!!!!!

I know that most of you think he must be much older than this because he behaves like a grumpy old man but no he will be 50 years old this month.

A few of us have some things to say to the old man – yes 50 years old, old man so here goes
Chris Jones has reached the grand old age of 50 most of it without Health and Safety Regulations below are listed a few things & events that have taken place during his 50years.

America gives birth to Barack Obama and George Clooney what do we come up with Frank Bruno and Chris Jones.

Russia sends the first man into space perhaps they knew something about the arrival of Chris that we didn't.

Can you imagine making a go-cart from old pram wheels, wood and no brakes (Health and Safety forget it), if not ask Chris he used to do this, I think they had only just invented the wheel though when Chris was a lad.

Teachers used the cane on children or smacked them with Gym Shoes don't bother going home and telling your parents as you may get another one as you must have deserved it ( How times change). Chris says bring this back!

In the good old days parents didn't give children names like Kiora, Blade,Ridge or Vanilla just boring ones like Christopher.

He had no playstation,WII,Xbox,Video Games,Mobile Phone or Personal Computer and he didn't get his friends from facebook like everybody else he had to actively make friends with other children, except no one told Chris about making friends.

In adulthood he has made lots of friends & contacts through writing the Archery Newsletter wonder how many he will keep due to handing the newsletter to someone else to write? I think this should be re-written that he has made lots of contacts through writing the newsletter because any friend he may have made he lost again by being rude about their age – did I mention that he is 50 years old.

Anyway old man we all wish you a very happy birthday and may you have many more, so we can write horrible things about you.

PS Did I mention that Chris Jones is 50 years old, From an anonymous member!!!

JUNIOR PROGRESS AWARD BADGES
This season the juniors have so far gained the following progress awards:

Harry Bowers – U12 Blue
Callum Spratt – U12 Blue
Ellis Brine  - U14 Blue and U14 Red
Ben Davis – U14 Blue
Dan Filer – U14 Blue
James Trott – U14 Blue
If you have archery equipment you no longer need and think would be suitable for new archers, please contact Adrian Rawle ar007a0739@blueyonder.co.uk who may have a solution.
EQUIPMENT AND STUFF...
Gary continues with his never ending equipment officer duties – built the extra 10 stands and assembled the 10 Danage bosses, the McDonalds drive thru is practically complete....... 3 extra wheelie target frames are now operational and most of the targets on the field are now backed with a straw boss so as to prolong the life of the foam bosses.
SHOOTING SHELTER
Although I may joke about the “burger bar”, please bear in mind that the construction surrounding the two containers was built as a shooting shelter for use in inclement weather conditions by any archer wishing to do so. If you turn up and the shelter is in use by shooting archers and you do not wish to shoot under it, please make sure you set up and shoot as well left of the shelter as possible, not in front of it... If you turn up hoping to shoot under the shelter and there are archers shooting in front of it, please ask them politely if they wouldn’t mind moving. Archers who are asked to move: you are not obliged to move, but on the other hand club facilities should not be denied to any member.

Also, for safety’s sake, if you are not shooting but wish to stay under shelter where there are archers shooting, please use the club house.
Beginners Lessons
Our 6 week Indoor beginners' course will run every Saturday between 12.00pm and 2.00pm from 28th January until 3rd March 2012, at a cost of £60 per participant. If you are interested please complete the entry form. The course will take place at Chipping Sodbury School Sports Hall. Sports shoes (trainers) must be worn at all times.

The times are dependant on the Sports Hall booking and we will inform you immediately of any changes. If you know anyone interested you can find the registration forms online at www.clevearchers.co.uk
TOURNAMENT DATES
For those of you who enjoy a bit of friendly and not too serious competition, here are some dates of local tournaments.

Entry forms can be obtained online from the relevant archery club websites or if you check the Diary pages of the Archery UK magazine. We will endeavour as usual to get some printed off and put them on the notice board. Also online on the Cleve or Gloucestershire web sites: http://www.clevearchers.co.uk/pages/tournaments.html
CLUB NIGHT
Thursday evenings will be “club night” where help can be offered to the less experienced archer. Refreshments will be available courtesy of Hillary around 7pm...... this will commence 21st April when we return off holiday.
JUNIORS – IMPORTANT NOTICE Two important notices for juniors and parents of juniors.
  1. Club rules state that junior archers (when not shooting) are the responsibility of their parents on Saturday mornings, parents are not to leave their children unattended. If you do need to leave please make sure you have left you child in the care of another adult (not the archery staff / coaches).
  2. Club rules state that no junior archer is allowed to shoot on their own unless there is another shooting /affiliated archer present.

Straw bosses and stands still available for sale – see Gary, Richard, Bob...
New sub committee
A new sub-committee has been formed consisting of members/adults from junior club so that they can go ahead with proposals without having to wait months before asking main committee for approval. Committee agreed.
Level 1 Coaching
The level 1 course is now completed and the assessment will take place on 4th February 2012.

Archery GB Ontarget
Cleve is now registered with Archery GB’s Ontarget club development programme – full details of this programme can be found on the Archery GB /GNAS website.

It is a progressive, evolving programme that is for every archery club across the UK. It recognises the accomplishments of archery clubs, rewards achievers and help clubs develop “a vital tool for archery to enhance clubs at grass root level, ultimately growing the sport for both existing and new members”.

A rewards programme will be available for clubs to access on joining and at stages throughout the scheme. A small grant scheme will be available for clubs.

The next 2 rounds of ontarget funding are going to be aimed at specialist clubs with the specialisms being Community, Youth and Perfomance.

Clubs need to meet certain criteria – Bob is in touch with Roger Crang who is the County Development Officer and will be arranging a workshop to discuss what can be done to help Gloucestershire clubs that want to move in that direction, getting things in place etc..
Clubmark Clubmark was introduced in 2002 by Sport England and is a national accreditation scheme for sports clubs that are committed to providing a safe, effective, child-friendly environment. It is designed to be recognised by parents, local authorities and schools as a quality mark that clubs of all governing bodies can achieve. Archery GB is licensed to give archery clubs accreditation. There is only one set of paperwork to complete and in general most clubs are well on the way to achieving accreditation without realising it. There are currently 27 archery clubs that have achieved Clubmark.  Deer Park Archers and Bowmen of Glen Archery Society are the latest clubs to achieve Clubmark. I think we should register our interest in becoming a recognised Clubmark club. Being an accredited club will assist us in any future funding bid and could possible assist us when we look at purchasing our own land and club facilities as a matched funding project. We have now applied for ClubMark acreditation.

ENGRAVING SERVICE
The winter months are an ideal time to get your trophies engraved - Rachel charges a fraction of the prices charged on the high street and can be contacted on 01454 773316.
RECYCLING
In the club house there is a box for recycling used ink cartridges / unwanted mobile phones – also a box for cans & plastic bottles.
Longbow league results are on the notice board.
The Longbow league consisted of shooting one round per month from April to August, this year the format was changed to shoot a different round each month instead of the traditional Western – we shot the Fita 720, Fita 900, Windsor, American and National. Next year the format will remain the same due to its popularity (maybe change the National) – so if all this sounds good to you and you fancy joining in, just get yourself a longbow....we’d be delighted to have you join us.
END OF SEASON SHOOT – 1st OCTOBER
A splendid turnout with     archers taking part. Since we combined the shoot with seniors & juniors last year we have had record numbers of entries, this is a trend we will continue with.....
The weather was terrifically hot with a pleasant breeze – sorry I couldn’t book the Red Arrows for a fly past as Denise had booked them for a private party..... :-)

Many thanks to all who helped set up and a special thanks to Tricia for compiling the junior scores and also to the infamous Cleve Cackling Caterers for the excellent BBQ.

My “performance of the day” goes to Peter Allen, last years Novice champion, who took the Gents Recurve trophy this year – so all you novice archers out there, keep practicing because next year you ain’t novices..!

Indoor Shooting dates have been booked. Once again we will be using the excellent facilities of Chipping Sodbury School sports centre. Please be advised that the intention is to finish towards the end of March but that will depend on how many archers attend over both sessions – the rental charges to the club is quite high and the club  subsidised last years indoor shooting as the uptake for indoor shooting was quite low.

If we again get low numbers this year, then the indoor shooting will end at the end of February. The subject of fully or partially subsiding the indoor shooting is under debate by the committee, at the last committee meeting there was no conclusive answer.

Please comlete the attached forms to book your place at the indoor shooting venue.

Seniors Friday Nights Commences 4th November

Juniors Saturday Mornings
Commences 5th November
FUNDING FROM SPORT ENGLAND
Following lots of hard work by Bob Nicholls, please see this copy of email message received recently:

Hi Everyone

GOOD NEWS!!
I have received a letter from Sports England confirming that Cleve Archers have been successful in their bid for the Small Grants Programme Award of £7596.00. £712.00 of this is for fees and expenses of the Level 1 Coaching Course, the rest is for equipment to support the our project to introduce Archery to the community and schools in the area and to encourage existing members to sustain their participation and development in the sport.

This could be the start of increasing our club membership, increasing the number of events we offer, and to raise funds to buy our own land. Good news indeed....
